Markets Update:

Stock futures fell Sunday night as investors assessed growing uncertainty around the artificial intelligence industry and rising oil prices. S&P 500 futures dropped 0.6%, while Nasdaq-100 futures declined 1.2%. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped 179 points, or 0.4%.

Asian markets also traded mostly lower. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.59%, while South Korea’s Kospi dropped 3.45%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 0.33%, and China’s CSI 300 fell 0.66%.

Investor sentiment was pressured by developments surrounding major AI companies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the ChatGPT maker would not go public this year, calling an IPO at this stage “ill-advised.” The comments came shortly after OpenAI’s CFO had indicated the company could go public by 2027.

Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower pace of AI development because of safety concerns. He also highlighted the challenge of slowing innovation if China does not take similar steps.

Oil prices added to market pressure, rising more than 2% after Saudi Arabia shut a key pipeline bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. crude had already climbed above $100 a barrel last week amid escalating Middle East tensions.

Markets are now focused on the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, with traders pricing in an 86% probability of a rate hike.

 Upcoming Events:

●       12:30 PM    GMT  –   CAD   Median CPI y/y
